Stewarding Prophetic Words

Last week I talked about the danger of believing one must always have an open mind.

I don’t think there’s any time it’s more important to protect your mind than when you have been given a word from the Lord about something. If you aren’t extremely diligent, the enemy will come in and try to get you to doubt. He’ll cloud your mind with confusion. He’ll steal your hope.

This can apply to both personal and corporate words, although I believe you have the greatest responsibility when it comes to stewarding your personal words, because their fulfillment is often contingent upon your belief and obedience.

You cannot allow yourself to entertain thoughts that are contrary to what the Lord has said if you want to see the fulfillment of what he has promised you. You’re never going to make it to your promised land if you aren’t sure it’s for you or if it even exists.

So how do you protect your mind? How do you steward your prophetic words?

Strategies for Stewarding Your Prophetic Words

• Be cautious about what you are allowing into your mind. Don’t listen to things that make you doubt. Don’t watch things that bring confusion. Don’t spend too much time around friends who have no faith. You know your limits – and if you don’t, you’ll learn them through trial and error. Be strict about what you allow yourself to be exposed to.
• Fill your mind with the truth of Scripture! Identify any Scriptures that line up with your prophetic words. Find a Bible character that relates to what you’re going through. If you’re infertile and the Lord has promised you a baby from your own womb, read Sarah’s story or Hannah’s. If you’re literally believing for the impossible, consider Mary, the teenage virgin who gave birth to a Savior.
• Reread your prophetic words. Read them as often as you need to in order to keep believing. Don’t just write them down and forget about them. Sometimes you need to fight for them to come to pass!
• Don’t assume just because something happens that is contrary to your word, it can’t happen. That may be (and often is) simply an attack of the enemy to get you to doubt. Don’t fall for it. Keep your eyes on the spiritual and not the physical. The physical can lie. The spiritual is superior.
• Make declarations out loud. Decree Scripture. Decree what the Lord has spoken to you. Do it every day if you have to.
• Go through Dan McCollam’s prophetic processing workbook, The Good Fight. This book helps you identify details like the timing, people involved, and repeated themes from your prophetic words.
• Ask God what he is speaking to you right now, and ask him to confirm what he has already spoken. He’s always speaking; we just need to listen, and sometimes he’s speaking in a different way than he has before.
• Ask God for dreams and visions. He often speaks and confirms things through our dreams while we sleep; we just need to tune into what he is saying.
• Throw out a fleece. If Gideon did this, so can we! We never want to manipulate God, but if he knows our hearts are right, he is perfectly capable of providing a sign that we are on the right track.
• Have a trusted prophetic friend go through the prophetic word with you. He or she will probably notice things you didn’t.
• Ask yourself if there are any conditions to the prophetic word. Is there something God told you to do in order for the word to come to pass that you have not yet done? What are you waiting for? Obedience is often the key that unlocks the blessing.
• Worship. Play songs of joy even when you don’t feel joyful. Sing songs of gratitude even when you feel like you have nothing to be thankful for. Give God the sacrifice of your praise, and worship your way into the breakthrough you need. CHOOSE to love and trust God, even when you’re not seeing the thing you’re believing for yet.
• Live and celebrate as if it’s already done. In the spiritual realm, it is! Praise God in advance for what he has said he will do.
• Decide you’re all in. Sometimes you just need to decide. Choose to be unwavering in your belief. Exercise your faith muscles even when you don’t “feel” much faith rise up, and resolve to make decisions as if there is no Plan B.

Resolutely protect the promises God has spoken over you. Stand on God’s word with confidence. And you shall see the goodness of God in the land of the living.

God is not man that he should lie. If you haven’t seen the fulfillment yet, it’s either because you’ve given up or because it’s still coming. Contend for your promise until the day you see it, because you SHALL see it if you persist and persevere.

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
